To identify yours: check the metal tag on the chimney cap or any paperwork from the original fireplace install. No tag? Measure flue diameter and crown overhang. The Copperfield pour-in-place forms require exact flue sizing, a half-inch mismatch and the form won’t seat. For pre-cast crowns, we need the full crown dimensions, not just flue size, because Copperfield produced at least three shoulder widths for 13″×13″ base configurations.

Signs Your Copperfield Crown Repair Is Failing

• Hairline cracks running from flue edge to crown border. These form when the concrete crown expands and contracts through Lansdale’s freeze-thaw cycles. Water enters, freezes, and widens the crack. By spring you’ve got a channel directing water straight to the brick below.
• Water dripping into the firebox during rain, even with the damper closed. The crown’s slope or drip edge has failed. On Copperfield pour-in-place crowns, we often find the form was removed too early during original install, leaving a porous surface that never sealed.

Here’s where DIY goes wrong. Crown work requires working at height on a roof surface that may be steep, possibly wet, with tools and wet concrete. The pour-in-place forms must release clean, the mix must slope 1/4″ per foot minimum for drainage, and the new crown needs proper curing time before any rain.
